Onsite Maintenance & Condition Surveys
I travel nationwide to undertake condition surveys of horological collections and to provide specialist advice on storage, display and operation in order to maximise accessibility and interpretation as well as the longevity of the collection. Detailed reporting identifies at-risk objects and helps to formulate long- and short-term conservation strategies.
Surveying can be combined with onsite maintenance to maximise safe object operability. A regular programme of maintenance visits can extend the service intervals of working mechanical objects and reduce the need for more costly studio repair.
Studio conservation & Overhauling
Based in West Sussex, I am fully equipped to personally carry out a range of services for a wide variety of antique clocks, from basic cleaning, servicing and repair, to research and reinstatement of missing components and sub-mechanisms.
All work is carried out using traditional skills and methods, but underpinned with modern materials science and conservation theory, in order to preserve both the historic narrative and the material authenticity of the object.
education & collections care training
For three years I taught regularly on the clock conservation programme at West Dean College, covering historical and technical aspects of horology, practical repair skills and conservation theory, to students with a range of backgrounds and ability levels.
I continue to offer specific horological collections care training to staff and volunteers of museums and historic houses, as well as visiting lecturer services to higher-education institutions.
