Dale Sardeson

clockmaker · conservator · horological collections consultant

I am a clockmaker-conservator based in West Sussex, with a passion for traditional craft and materials science. I undertook my clockmaking training at West Dean College, before going on to complete an MA in Conservation.

I specialise in the conservation, service and repair of antique clocks and am experienced with a range of objects, from English Longcase, Skeleton and Dial Clocks, through to French Pendule and Carriage Clocks. I have also worked on some more unusual and esoteric projects, including Japanese Wadokei, Singing Bird Automata, and a World War II Jeep Speedometer. My work is underpinned with traditional skills and contemporary conservation thinking, ensuring that all repairs are sympathetic to the object and preserve its historic narrative. With access to a wide range of workshop equipment, I am able to manufacture most components in-house when parts are missing or damaged beyond repair. This also means I am able to undertake new build commissions, and I am happy to work on replica or pre-existing designs, as well as create bespoke, original pieces.

As well as private clients, I also work for public institutions and historic houses, ensuring all my work is carried out in line with the Institute of Conservation’s Professional Standards and Code of Conduct. I have experience in collections management, and am able to advise on storage, display and conservation strategy for all types of horological collections.
